Performance Art

Melissa Smedley makes art for the situation and the most apropos response can often be performance of a sculptural kind. A living sculpture, a visual struggle, a meta journey. Since the video camera entered her toolbelt alongside the drill, hammer and sewing machine, Smedley has devised a number of video performances and invented rituals that occur outside of any art “establishment”.
